Georgetown, Texas, the county seat of Williamson County, once a farming community only, is now a vibrant destination for tourists and students alike. Initially, a solution for the pioneers of Sweden, the city has experienced steady growth since its inception.
The city was founded in 1848, located in fork San Gabriel River. Swedish pioneers originally settled the area due to the fact that land prices were considerably cheaper than some areas surrounding, and also due to the fact that the land was very fertile. Since its inception, Georgetown lived most of his life as a farming community and only recently has begun to fall away from farm life.
The town was named after George Washington Glasscock, a Kentucky businessman who was prolific lived in many different places, from St. Louis to Illinois to Texas. In 1846 he donated 172 ha of land in order to start the city and as a result, the city was named in his honor.
In 1873 the University was founded in the city of Georgetown. Southwestern University, the oldest school in Texas is still there and is celebrated own. This university, along with the arrival of Austin and Northwestern Railroad, brought a steady influx of new residents to the area. This trend continued steadily all the way across the city's history.
Agriculture, particularly cotton, was a driver of population growth in the city until in some time in 1950 when the overall composition of the city began to change. As Austin continued to grow faster and faster, the effect of growth was felt by many neighboring communities. In the 1960s, the main form of growth in Georgetown and was not based on the railways and agriculture, but was one based on an influx of residential and commercial properties.
In 1963, while construction of a highway, a large cave was discovered, the first in the area. Cave of interior space, as would be known, was a huge cave structure before this point was fully discovered. Large portions of the structure of the cave remain unexplored and for this reason, the cave has become a popular tourist destination. The cave was opened to tourists in 1966 and has remained active since then. Visitors are loaded onto a cable car that descends into the cave and are able to walk more than a mile from the structure of the cave.
Since the last census of the area would have approximately 30,000. With the attraction of the School and the cave, the area has been relatively untouched by the recession in the rest of the nation. House prices have been stable and the average income of the area.
